Years ago, during a nine-year stint in London as an economic migrant, I was sitting in a pub looking at Leeds United v Someone-or-other in a match of no consequence to anyone in the pub but me (it was an Irish pub called Mulligans, in Stratford, East London) when a black man walked in.
He was a little the worse for wear, but wasn't really bothering anyone as such - unlike the witless, ignorant gobshite you will see in the video above.
Anyway, one hero in the pub descended from his regular pew beside the bar, and ejected the reveler. He came back dusting his hands proudly before declaring in a strong Irish accent (as is mine, by the way) "just because he's black doesn't mean he has to be stupid", seemingly oblivious to similar bigoted attitudes towards he and his fellows in that pub and elsewhere in the UK.
I left in embarrassment.
Have a look at the video. It needs no further comment from me.

jesus wept - Ireland's loss, Brighton's gain. I'd hate him to catch me robbing his house if wakin' the fuckhead up has such a bad impact on his day. Very pleased to note that he's "not a racist" cos for just a minute or two there I wasn't quite sure! God help Brighton with this muppet wandering the streets there.

Reminds me of when I lived in the East End - shopping in Bromley by Bow and a row broke out between "Paddy" and a British couple - he started shouting at them to go home to where they came from - couldn't believe what I was hearing - I pointed out that himself and myself were probably the only 2 foreigners in the shop...and they stay travel broadens the mind...
About six years ago I was standing in the lane busking when all of a sudden this prick showed up and startet yelling directly into my face: "You fucking German cunt! You once tried to invade the world and now you're trying it again. Go back home where you belong!" It happened only once. If he'd come again today, I'd crush him! But another busker here in town, a Slovakian guy, is still victim to this racist shit nearly every week. The worst thing about it is, that nobody gives a damn!
"The worst thing about it is, that nobody gives a damn!" That's probably the most disturbing bit. Though Nenad, it's the preserve of the deluded. It's not what you see in Ireland, it's what you don't see, which is the problem...One of the few disclosures being the bizarre Anglo Irish Tapes...
There's so much stuff that goes on here that doesn't get reported too, or doesn't get reported as race/nationality related.
Like that Irish Times pieces covered in
http://www.gombeennation.blogspot.ie/2013/06/racist-BandB-anti-immigrant-racism-anglo-irish-executiives-sack-german-newsaper.html
Quote below:
"What surprised Ernest about the monkey chants during his daily commute to Maynooth was their persistence. As an African man in Ireland he says he is used to racist insults but when a man taunted him on the train and then followed him off it, he knew things had reached a new low. “In a coach full of people he did a monkey chant and told me to go back to my own country and to stop taking our jobs,” he says.
“Then he followed me off the train and walked beside me doing monkey chants. It amazed me that no one stepped in and said, ‘What do you think you are doing?’ ” he says.
"The GardaĆ were called when he confronted the man but Ernest declined to press charges. “I don’t see any cases of anyone getting convicted over racist insults. It’s a waste of my time to take something like that any farther,” says Ernest, who doesn’t want to give his real name."
You see here what Irish "men" are. Only the women stood up. I am so deeply ashamed.
I know what those so-called "men" were thinking: "he won't take a swing at a woman, but he might give me a poke in the eye. I'd better remain seated like the submissive, spineless milquetoast I was reared to be."
The loudmouth knew he was safe. He knew the black man wouldn't defend himself, being outnumbered.
We make good bullies, don't we? We'll beat our chests when we've got the advantage and safety is assured.
It makes me sick to see the cowardice and submissiveness bred into Irish "men" -- again and again...
thomas
Hiya Thomas. This loudmouth gobshite is, I imagine, living and working in the UK and spreading his ignorance around a bit.
The Maynooth one above is something that was reported on an Irish train in June (not sure when it actually happened).
LOL, right GM, the words BRIGHTON TRAIN were displayed too prominently for me to notice.
But I hope I didn't just imagine an Irish man's voice courageously threatening to report him to the authorities.
Seems our cousins across the sea are as castrated as we are. Maybe it *is* all their fault after all.
thomas
Thomas, never mind being out of context in this case, as you have identified an important Irish trait. A fact I mentioned before on the Blog; that as a grouping Irish Women are more masculine than their "male" counterparts. Getting pickled in cheap beer and spirits is not masculinity.
As someone put it here before: the Paddys are all gone! There are only Marys left in this country :))
I have to say, DC, that this is the only way to keep the lid on our rotten little society. Submissiveness is reinforced at every level, every day. If we were to develop anything resembling masculine self respect, well, imagine the consequences for the elite whose boots are on our necks.
thomas
Thomas, yes, constant and continuous reinforcement of a way of thinking, is only going to produce one outcome. One example, is the simple trick of branding any deviant "digit" from the norm, as being in some way less intelligent, or a bit odd. Think of all those property supplements a few years ago, can you remember many "digits" just calling as it was? No neither can I.
It really is truly staggering, how decisively an entirely a Nation can be so completely brainwashed, and hence TRASHED. THEN in addition to all the extra TAXES, with NO improvement in the SYSTEMS OF ACCOUNTABILITY, FG go up 1%, FF steady, and car sales go up for second half of the year. Masculinity? No. None. A hybrid drunk feminine culture. Yes. What is the expectations? Christ it's a KIP.
It is a kip, DC3, thomas.
I wouldn't read too much into those car sales figures, by the way. If I'm not mistaken, it's just a comparison with this time last year, before they brought in the July reg plates (this 131, 132 business). It will mean fewer sales in January, I should imagine.
This really is a disgrace. This drunkard clown is racially abusing an innocent black woman (I bet that this heroic race warrior would think twice about racially abusing a young black man who would be more likely to defend himself). Not only that, but his drunken paddy builder image is a stereotype that too many Paddy clowns are all to keen on perpetuating. I saw a pub load of these pisshead, brain dead fucking wankers in a pub in Kilburn not too long ago (not my thing I stress, but I went to a mate's birthday drinks and he chose the location- definitely not me).
I feel that there is little hope for many Irish; they are so brain dead and so insecure in their identity that they think that playing up to negative stereotypes is a requirement or they do it for attention. Either way, it's pathetic.
The only person "man" enough to intervene was a foreign woman. Bravo to all the "men" sitting within earshot of this racist, drunken, walking stereotype, moron.
That's why I don't play the pubs anymore! Since 2009 to be precise. Not that there are many jobs out there anyway but if someone asks me I reject.
One of the last regular gigs I played was around 2009, on a sunday after a hurling match. Still remember. The crowd was about 300 from both teams. After a while a fight broke out. A woman who was standing in front of me got pushed and flew in to the corner. Only her high-hels remained where she was standing before! "Play some rebell!" they shouted. Just one of many joys playing in a pub :))
I played in a pub/wedding band some years back, and in certain pubs (The Kestrel, Walkinstown; The Lakes, Blessington) You have gobshites coming up asking why we didn't play the national anthem.
Pity I didn't have my version ready back then.
Oh that would have been great, I imagine! :D
Best thing are requests:
Can you play this, can you play that?
No!
Why not?
Because I don't!
Why not!
Because I don't!
Give us some Christy Moore!
I don't like Christy Moore!
What?! Why not?
Because I don't!
Play the Galway Girl then!
etc.
I always laugh at the term "rebel songs", Ned. The same people who bowed (forwards and backwards) for the priests and nuns, and voted against divorce and abortion rights.
They're far from being rebels.
Ah yes, the old gigging days. Some awful hellholes we played!
"Hellholes" is good! :))
It's so funny how most of the Germans picture the classic irish pub: a cosy place, with friendly people and lovely music.
I played in some shitholes, I tell you that! But at least the money was good then. One of the things I always longed for was a cage for myself on the "stage", like in the Blues Brothers movie. That thing "we play everything: country and western" in irish perspective would be "we play everything: rebel and trad".
Believe it or not: in all those years I had maybe 5 gigs maximum that were really good. Most of the time I felt like "oh Jaysus, let's get the fuck out of here!"
And there's another thing: lately I felt like people hated me! Not only me because I'm german though. No, they hated all the musicians. Took me a while to find out why. They go: how much does he get for one night? What?! €150?!! Motherfucker! I have to work 3 days for the same money!
And there you go. That's when they'll give you a hell of a time ...
That Blues Brothers screen sounds like a good idea, N.
And you're right, I'll bet there is a lot of financial grudgery going on too. But let them try carrying about and setting up the gear, and all the rest.
Nenad/GM, it's an odd country, a nation of begrudgers when Paddy learns you get EUR 150 for a gig (hard earned and well deserved recompense in my view), yet the voting public elect dishonest politicians all too often - and the attitude to brown envelopes is well Mr X got the job done, brought jobs to the area, it doesn't matter if he took a backhander in the process.. nod and wink stuff - AGH!
Hi Ella! "recompense" is a good term for it. When people go: "€150 for two hours playing music? Isn't it a bit too much?!" My answer would be: "The music is for free. I'm getting paid for the shit which comes along." So it's kind of pain and suffering money :)
GM, do you know the difference between a german and an irish Irish Pub? Folks in Germany go to the irish pub because they want to listen to good music having a pint or two. Folks in Ireland go to the irish pub because they wanna get pissed and laid. Exeptions prove the rule ...
"lately I felt like people hated me! Not only me because I'm german though." Neand it is the most reprehensible BOG HOLE on the planet. BEGRUDDERY is the reason why it will never be anything more than a VENEMOUS BACKWATER.
"yet the voting public elect dishonest politicians all too often." Ella as ever in Ireland, they do it because they can, and no one gives a toss one way or the other. The only thing the Irish understand is PROVING A POINT. Doesn't make for a nice place to live though.
LOL reading the comments here and it's astounding how so many people from so many walks of life all agree on this, and yet, if I say on Dublin streets "Dublin Bus sucks" I'll get a hearty serving of "If you don't like it go home". And Dublin Bus really does suck. Third world countries are catching up and lapping Dublin Bus.
DC3, just to avoid misunderstanding: they don't hate me because I'm a German playing music here. They hate me because I got cash for playing music! That's what I meant ...
But here is another one for you. Fresh from the lane, happened today:
3 travellers came along, one in a wheelchair (his legs amputated due to heavy drug use), asking me for a smoke. I said I don't smoke. So they made remarks about my gear and asked how much it costs. I said it doesn't matter. That's when one of them said: "Don't be a wise-arse. We asked you a simple question!" I told them to fuck off. Wheelchair said: "I know somebody who's gonna cut your face off!"
So I called the guards ... twice. In the meantime the knackers harassed some other folks who were sitting nearby. Nobody stood up or said a word. Wheelchair turned to me again and said: "Go back to your country where you come from!" After that they were gone. The guards never showed up ...
Hya Nenad "That's what I meant ..." Yes I know.
"if I say on Dublin streets "Dublin Bus sucks" I'll get a hearty serving of "If you don't like it go home". It is a form of collective insanity Bulwark. Good example of Turkeys voting for Christmas. And Dublin Bus IS by the way another TURKEY.
Though Bulwark, logic would dictate that no society can be that completely stupid; to think that such a badly run organisation, which has a plethora of ignorant, obnoxious individuals as their daily representation is a genuine asset? BUT IT IS IRELAND...Just when you think it can't get any more surreal, it always does.
Ireland is a bit like trying to scream in a vacuum, ultimately pointless.
Gombeen Nation is a select "Gathering" of people, Bulwark! :-)
@Bulwark - LOL here I don't even consider Dublin Bus a form of transport, so scant are their services at times. I know better - London has the tube (8 years), Brussels (the metro) 18 months. Spent a reasonable amount of time in Delhi (holidaying! over the years and the public transport there is much better than here. Why oh why I sometimes ask myself did I ever return "home"?
