Man dances on Haughey's grave.

A 1994 Lotto jackpot winner, Vincent Keaney,  has posted footage of himself dancing on the grave of one of Ireland's best known corrupt politicans, Charlie Haughey.  He dedicated it to all of the Irish people "who hate the fucker", but presumably not to all of the fuckers who voted for Haughey - time and time again - during his overlong and corrupt lifetime.

So is dancing on Haughey's grave an effective form of protest?  Whatever about that, it seems to have created a bit of a stir anyway, at least on Joe Duffy's Liveline programme.  As I work for a living, I didn't hear all the fuss when shocked layabouts phoned up Joe to express their disgust at the Boss's final plot being utilised in such a fashion.  I've no strong feelings on it one way or the other, aside from the fact that anything that causes indignation in Liveline listeners can't be such a bad thing.

Haughey, though, wasn't the first slippery chancer and opportunist to defile our rotten little republic  -  that's a grand tradition that goes back to Dev.   And we all know that Haughey won't be the last, with plenty of them still stalking terra firma, rather than reposing below it.

If Keaney hangs around long enough, he'll be a busier man than Michael Flately.

Dancing on Haughey's grave.
It goes on a bit, but you get the idea:

You forgot about Pearse.
There's a grave to piss on.

I mentioned on another blog yesterday, that this grave danicing incident made me go back and look up Hunter S. Thompson’s infamous obituary for Richard Nixon, published in Rolling Stone in 1994.

If the right people had been in charge of Nixon's funeral, his casket would have been launched into one of those open-sewage canals that empty into the ocean just south of Los Angeles. He was a swine of a man and a jabbering dupe of a president. Nixon was so crooked that he needed servants to help him screw his pants on every morning. Even his funeral was illegal. He was queer in the deepest way. His body should have been burned in a trash bin.

These are harsh words for a man only recently canonized by President Clinton and my old friend George McGovern -- but I have written worse things about Nixon, many times, and the record will show that I kicked him repeatedly long before he went down. I beat him like a mad dog with mange every time I got a chance, and I am proud of it. He was scum.

Let there be no mistake in the history books about that. Richard Nixon was an evil man -- evil in a way that only those who believe in the physical reality of the Devil can understand it. He was utterly without ethics or morals or any bedrock sense of decency.

And let's not wait till B. Ahern is six feet under before dancing on his corpse. If that parasite makes it as far as Phoenix Park, then you might as well just shut down the whole country, and let anyone with an ounce of intelligence leave.

Haughey may not have been the first corrupt Irish or even Fianna Fáil politician, but he took the art of scamming the nation to new heights and set new "standards" for his successors. Ultimately, the protest may just end up distracting people from the economic and political crisis in this country.

A little bit of pot calling kettle black I fear. Vincent Keaney is by all accounts a bit of a chancer businessman himself. http://www.independent.ie/national-news/lotto-dream-dies-as-titanic-restaurant-is-sunk-254764.html

You picked up on something re the people who voted for Haughey, same 30% of the sheepish electorate who think FF are doing a decent job..Spot on about Liveline too.As for grave dancing,it's seems like a middle class twat looking for some attention,he probably lost some investment properties recently in Bulgaria or Iraq.

Its disgusting, dispicable, bizzare. Another taboo just abandoned all because some fool is looking for attention. This country is gone down the swanee, mainly because of halfwits like him. Who voted for Mr Haughey?
Okay corruption in high places has to take its place when it comes to blame but it all comes down to individuals and responsibility. This stupidity shows a very nasty streak, which is on the increase.

Vincent Keaney doesn't come out of this as anything other than a complete tosser.

Ironically his lotto wealth comes for a competition introduced by - you guessed - CJ Haughey
