Christmas comes but once a year, and it is just as well in my case. I don't know what category you fall into - Pioneer abstainer, vegan pagan or, like me, blathered blogger; it's difficult to avoid the stuff even if you wanted to.
You see, on the left, a picture taken of a Tesco trolley destined for Gombeen Manor. Well, you've got to have some booze there in case someone drops in, don't you? It would be rude otherwise.
But isn't that what Christmas is all about, as an older Gombeen Nation post attests? "Christmas", albeit with different names, existed this time of year among the ancients, long before the Christians (and other religious deceivers) came along and attempted to take all the fun out of it.
I remember as a kid finally teasing out from my Old Dear that Santa didn't exist. The next logical question was "what about God?". "YES, HE DOES!" was the unequivocal reply.
So you see, you can believe whatever brand of nonsense you want. For my part, I'm off for another beer or two before the Leeds United v Blackpool match kicks off.
Another example of the misery that blind faith can bring...
Merry Christmas - in every sense.

Hi GM, merry christmas and all that - that's right vary your alcohol - I'm sure that each different type has it's own nutritional benefit!!
that christmas song is awful.
perhaps you might like Bad Manners - It's Christmas Time Again

sorry ella but that xmas song is bloody brilliant. i've never seen anything like the gradual creep of xmas, how it settles on the skin in september and has invaded every internal organ by december, the cards, the colour scheme, the decorations, the pretence at good will and the final paroxysyms (is that right?) of guilt driven consumerism as the advent calendars run out. It makes me want to grab every fake santa beard off and add them to the bonfire. Sadly it's a big bonfire. Anyway Ella - i love your posts, all of them except this one but you and Dakota and Nenad and Thomas and a few others are still on my list of invitees to Ryans of Parkgate street for the 'Pints are on Ponyboy Night' when i make it to ireland. We'll have a ball and we'll try not to make too much of a fuss of GM, you know - we don't want him getting a big head or anything just because he focussed all our attentions on exactly what those issues were that had us hopping mad over the year but not knowing what the label said.

@PB, I'm gutted.... having a large one here, to get over the trauma of being criticized and in such a public manner I might add..
@GM - I know that Bad Manners song is not their finest, but at least it sounds happy and cheerful and I could imagine jumping around to it.
@Ella - your's will all be doubles on the big night out at Ryans. now put me back on that xmas mailing list ha ha
@Ella. I like the song... olde worlde as it is. Think it's pretty good lyrically for 1962. But each to their and all that (isn't that the overriding ethos of the blog!)
@PB. That pub meet-up sounds nice. I'm not sure you want to make it "the Pints are on Ponyboy Night" though... it could cost you some serious cash! ;-)
Pub meeting with you lads? For that I would come over again ... ;)
