Germany v Argentina... glad we're not there?

Gombeen Manor is in the grip of World Cup fever at the moment. OK, it was a cheat and we didn’t qualify – but who is to say we actually would have, anyway? Whatever about that handball, the early exits of France and Italy from the tournament – both of them from our qualifying group – serve as a reminder of where we are, football wise, at the moment.

But what about Germany? You know how it usually is – dour, methodical and frustratingly effective Germany? Well this time they are the most entertaining, the most creative, and the most energetic team in the World Cup. 4-0 against Australia, 4-1 against England, and 4-0 against Argentina. Think about that. Argentina. Four bloody nill!

Messi looked like a lost soul as Germany, with two minutes to go, were still rampaging forward in search of a fifth. And Messi, unusually for football superstars, normally does his playing on the pitch rather than before the TV ad cameras.

Just imagine if we had qualified, and somehow progressed far enough to come up against this lot?  Maybe Henry did us a favour after all?  Maybe.

I thought England would be out in the first round.
The French exit shocked me..The USA's progression surprised me.. Ghana's defeat on penalties the other night upset me. I'm glad Ireland, Scotland and Wales failed to qualify....

Good post GM, but you kept your eye, and your blog off the ball. ;)

@ Harry. Yes, that should be interesting alright... nice opportunity for Messi to show a few tricks.

@ Anon. Yes, it was a shame to see Ghana going out. Looking forward to Germany V Spain though.

Q: I am considering spending a considerable amount of money on predicting the world cup winner: Advice needed:
SHOULD I gamble all on Germany or is there a better way to invest my 2 euros??

@ Anna. Football's a funny old game, as they say, and you could end up as sick as a parrot rather than being over the moon should Germany fail to beat Spain and make the final. I'd say they're full of confidence at the moment, and if they are on form they can beat Spain and then the Netherlands in the final(I'm being presumptious here).

Feck it. Throw caution to the wind, Anna!

GM I couldn't be happier there was some good football in this world cup. Any team from these islands would only ruin it. The hype which is English football was proven to be nothing more than a wag fest, celebrity fueled binge.

You're right, D. Look at the disparity in what these guys are paid compared to some of the players they look second best to.

How often do we see it? Ireland are playing terribly with, for example, Damien Duff underperforming - then the ad break comes on and there he is doing ball juggling for a Lucozade ad. Rooney was the same for England.

World cup fever hit O Connell st: this eve as I passed the Oçonnell monument nicely dressed youngsters Swarmed all over it waving flags, singing, hugging each other, very joyful sight , made me feel quite elated+ similar clusters on Grafton st:yet no swearing, fighting, cans. bottles, fights ...why? the difference is they're Spanish.

NB: I was going to blow all my money on Germany, but Olly was dead against it, he predicted Spain.Well when i heard that, i thought the better of rushing to the bookies with my 2 euro, look he's only an octopus, but he knows a damn sight more about football than I do...well that's it I'll blow it all on spain.

Fair play to Olly. Glad you didn't blow it all on my top tip!!!
