Irish presidential election ballot paper - Hobson gave better choice

Yesterday you will have voted for the presidential candidates you felt were less offensive, in order to keep out the ones you felt were more offensive.

It's a waiting game now, with the first results expected in the early evening.   Let's hope you made the right choice, such as the choices were.

You know who they are...

2. The Bagman
3. Balaclava man
4. Norris
5. Mr Shifty
6. Special K ad
7. Duet with Jesus

Glad I gave Michael D my number one then, just to keep The Bagman out. (to John loving the descripions!)

Yes John... all instantly recognisable. "Special K ad"... love it.

True Ella... think that's what a lot of us did in the end. Old muttonhead can take his Fianna Fail baggage with him. More worryingly, initial feedback indicates FF could hold onto its sole Dublin seat in Dublin West, in the running for second place with Ruth Coppinger.

shocked to see the Fainna Fail candidate may come second. Some comfort for the Socialist Party. It seems that the electorate will forgive FF before the next election.

Yes... I think there is a hardcore of FF voters there who voted for the Lenihans come hell or high water. Now they'll vote for the heir to the dodgy throne. There's a couple of them on my own road, in fact.

Of course, even if their candidate does manage to finish second, FF will still lose its seat (contrary to my last hurried comment!).

Let's hope Coppinger puts him further down the field, just on principle.

GM don't let this result fool you, Sean Gallagher only lost by a whisker in real terms, in a short period of time. The new opium of the masses saw to that. This is FF country, true and true. Which is scarier a FF president or a population that can be swayed by the last thing they saw on television? It's shocking to think this FF canditate was so far ahead for so long. Profoundly corrupt country.

KILDARE SOUTH 1ST COUNT (turnout 54.02%): MDH 12,447 SG 9,733 MMcG 3,553 DN 1,966 GM 1,681 MD 937 DRS 645 #aras11

Just found it on Breakingnews: 1.681 votes for Gombeen Man? Didn't even know you were running for the Aras as well ;-)

@ Dakota. You've a very valid point there, D. No, I don't think we should be fooled at all. Too close for comfort by far... they are just waiting for the next FF messiah.

@ Harald. The bastards! Only 1,681 votes!!!!

Heard that Mary D. has another job lined up anyway ... the "Face" of Photoshop ...

I was disappointed to see Norris do worse than Marty McFly and Mitchell. Also disappointed to see the Brown Envelope do as well as he did.

But all's well that ends well; at least Michael D isn't a horrible choice. We could have had a real embarrassment.

Do we owe this to Marty, whose needling helped reveal the fraud behind the bag man's "affable lug" persona? If so, then he's a national hero, and can take his place among other beloved, self-sacrificing murderers like Michael Collins. Thus, in the election, we might say that Marty fought and died for the Republic :)

@ Bernd. Haha, like that one. Yeah... Photoshop leaves the humble old airbrush in the ha'penny place. What Stalin could have done with it...

@ Thomas. Yep... I'll second your point re MD. And yes, we owe Marty - though I never thought I would say it. Probably his most patriotic act ever.

I wonder, GM, whether the results suggest that the Irish populace is not, after all, as lacking in taste and intelligence as it pleases us to imagine?

Sure we'll hold judgement on that for a bit, Thomas. ;-)

Hi thomas

As GM says judgement should be with held. When all is said and done, it was the power of television and electoral transfers. Everything is fine and dandy if we were to live in a bubble. What will this election result do? Will it change four and half million minds? Will it rewrite the past? Will it improve the deficit? Will it dispense with cronyism, nepotism, thick Irish stupidity, the Quangos, etc? No to all of the above. It's going to take more than a new first citizen to REALLY change what's wrong with this rotten republic. Let no one be fooled, again.

I'd say thomas is being a bit tongue in cheek there, D. Sure I think all of us here on GN would be delighted if this was a new beginning... even if it meant there was nothing to blog about or comment about for any of us anymore... we know it's unlikely to happen though. Sadly.

Michael D ( an animal lover) is going to get an offical First Presidential Dog- dog lovers like me are rejoicing. My family once had a farm dog, had to give him up when we moved to town- it is tricky and demanding looking after a dog in a small space. No such problem with the wide grounds of the Aras which even has its own small lake. So I think one 4 legged citizen will be very happy.
