John Delaney's salary - it's that Irish L'Oréal thing again

Last Friday's 0-0 result away to Sweden wasn't a bad one, and the Irish team played with a level of application last seen under Jack Charlton.

I wasn't going to bother switching on the TV, to be honest - Republic of Ireland games have been drab, dour affairs under Trapattoni - a manager who can't communicate with his players and whose sell-by-date is well past its time.

The Football Association of Ireland appointed Trapattoni amid much fanfare in May 2008, some thought it a master stroke by John Delaney, head honcho at the FAI.   Ireland qualified for the European Championship finals in 2012, but were humilated at every match in a tough group.

You would think Delaney capable of master-strokes, given the salary he draws from the FAI, a notoriously inept organisation.  According to Michael Clifford in today's Sunday Times, Delaney's wages amount to €360,000 per annum.   He was previously on €400,000 before straitened times saw staff being laid off and Delaney feeling the pain by taking a pay cut.

€360,000 is still a hell of a lot of money.  The head of Spanish Football Angel Maria Villar, for example, is on €152,000.   Spain, by the way, are the current World Cup and European Championship holders.

Go figure.

Mad, isn't it? And then there's Richie Boucher who got an €843,000 package when leaving bankrupt Bank of Ireland.

'Tis a strange place in which we live.

In 2009 the german bank-management-board of Dresdner Bank got some 58 Mio retirement grant after being merged with Commerzbank. This is one year after the crash in 2008 btw. I was working for Dresdner Bank back in 2002 fo two months of work-expirience as a web-designer. I lerned that when you go up the ranks the guys are getting less and less competent but the earning gets better and better. All these man don't have a real clue what's going on but are great talkers. The hard work is done by footsoldiers who get mnimum payment. This is the world we live in ...

@Anon
Go and fuck yourself with a poker ...

Nice work if you can get it....

@Nenad - I've noticed that too, the higher up the career/salary scale people go, the less they seem to do. "great talkers" - how polite, you mean bullshitters shurely!

@Anonymous 19h35 - are you mad or what. On second thoughts don't bother answering that one.

This is another example of the two nations we have in Ireland. We love to pretend that the Irish are a classless society, but this type of massive salary for an elite are a symptom of a class based colonial inheritance, that is found in all former colonies. Also, interesting that there is never talk of having one team represent Ireland. They managed it with rugby.

@ DC. Jasus... lots of it I hope!!

@ Nenad. Same where I work - all those meetings only serve to promote spoofers and increase the atmosphere's greenhouse gases.

@ Ella. It certainly is. No wonder he can afford to buy a few pints.

@ There was some talk of that years back, John. Derek Dougan and Johnny Giles were both in favour, I think. Haven't heard much since, as both the FAI and the IFA would be loathe to give up their power bases... and John Delaney his salary!

i think you are all missing the point here, ok delaney gets paid a lot but top people get top money, thats capitalism, he got denis obrien on board to pay the manager and built a world class stadium for the team and we did qualify for the euros. sometimes we knock our own too quickly, maybe its time for us all to pull on the green jersey to make this country great again.

The Gombeen Man said...

That's right Mick. We're all missing the point as to why Delaney is on more than twice as much wonga as his Spanish equivalent whose team not only routinely qualifies, but wins tournaments.

Great again? When was it ever?

surely you've not forgotten the celtic tiger already!!!!, dont forget that for over a decade our economy was the wonder of the world.also spain are not doing great at the moment football-wise.

The Gombeen Man said...

Ah. Now I know for sure you're messing.

Mick taking the Mick, surely.

Well, we're back to normal now. Goal conceded in extra time and a good lead thrown away.

By the way folks. I have enabled word verification for comments because of spam. (More about this in a later post).

It's not as unreadable as the old version - type in the letters and words, but with no space in between I think.

Let's know how you get on with it.

Seems to be working. CAPTCHA not as illegible as last version.

re:late equaliser, trap was right when he said you cant trust kids to hold on to a lead, ah well there's always the next euros when they will be more mature and trap can get his message through to them.

Hmmm, Mick.

Then why not bring on Wes Hoolahan? He's not a kid and is doing great for Norwich every week.

Why take off Long, who was playing a blinder and could have held it up at the other end?

No, I'm not convinced.

Was good so see so much spirit though, so a shame really.

I have noticed this with public servants- i have had 10 yrs experience of working in this- Incredible Incompetence =- and when asked to deal with any workplace nasties- they think they are doing their job by making victims out to be aggressors - incredible! these jokers and incompetents would be Sacked in any other country.
Ireland is simply a Passive Aggressive nation.
